Disabling Auto-hide in Unity

| Comments

I recently bought a ThinkPad L512 and installed Ubuntu 11.04. I was expecting to hate the new Unity interface, but it has turned out to be pretty impressive, apart from a few small problems, one of which is the inability to easily disable the auto-hide feature. After some Googling, I found that it can be done like so:

  1. Install the CompizConfig Settings Manager
    1

    sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
  2. Open CompizConfig Settings Manager
    1

    ccsm
  3. Under the ‘Desktop’ section, open ‘Ubuntu Unity Plugin’
  4. Change the ‘Hide Launcher’ drop-down box to ‘Never’
  5. You’re done.

It’s not very difficult to do, but unfortunately unclear. I’d like to see a more straightforward configuration tool for Unity actually ship with Ubuntu in the future.
